As part of the Reflections on Rural Life project, we are visiting people, businesses and orchards in the Hood River Valley in north-central Oregon.  Such a beautiful spot!  Marcia, the pie-maker at Apple Valley Store, graciously agreed to let us photograph and paint her.  She made 3500 pies last year!  Visit their site for a look at a great family-run business and delicious foods to order.

"Buttering a Bagel" (sold)

8"x6" image size

Buttering her bagel at the Grand Central Bakery in Portland's Sellwood community on a rainy morning. I really like doing these backlit subjects and look forward to practicing them more and more! Though I like the muted tones in this painting, I'd like to try this subject again with some more intense color--we'll see!
