This was so much fun to paint!  I worked to "mass" in the composition, but then because I've been wanting to explore the use of line more in my work, I started drawing with my brush.  After that, I played with filling out the form with color, leaving line where it seemed to work.  It was a good way to break out of the rut I feel I've been in, wanting to model everything so carefully.  I'm pleased with the freshness this painting kept and at the fact that I don't think I overworked it--an achievement!!

The color in the photo isn't great and I will be replacing it with a different photo tomorrow.

This is a study of a fellow named Burke who was looking at art in one of the galleries I've shown in recently.  This started out really tight.  I was trying to paint him full-figure and after not enjoying it for too long, I wiped it off, focused in on his upper body and just painted it!  I enjoyed the spontaneity!

This painting was created at the suggestion of someone who saw "White Winter Coat". He thought it would be fun to have the viewer be looking at MY paintings rather than someone elses! I liked his idea, and here it is. It was really fun to do. I loved working with those whites!

These ladies are looking at paintings (mine, actually!) at a First Friday Artwork here in Bend. I really like the body language of the two of them and their interaction with the work. I've painted them once before but decided to do it again as I am curious about revisiting some of my past subjects since I was at the Kim English workshop. I'm trying to approach my work a little differently--more spontaneous, getting the shapes down and trying not to get into the rendering for some time. It is a challenge!

I played hooky from my illustration job today and painted! I've been looking at this subject for some time now and was attracted by the story and the movement in the figures. The setting is a gallery I showed in--Tumalo Art Company--for five years. It is a great collective of painters, sculptors, photographers and more. As of May 1st, I am no longer a member as I am now represented locally by a new gallery opening this week: River Bend Fine Art Gallery. I am excited to show my work in the company of such wonderful artists!

Yesterday was not a good painting day! I ended up working all day on an 11x14 piece, then wiped it off! I must have learned something--at least I hope so as I'm not at all sure what it was! One thing that came of it, though, was in coming into work today, I just was able to let go of expectations and just paint. It's always amazing to me how much can ride on a painting--so many expectations and hopes, fears, self-worth, etc. Sometimes it's really hard not to get caught up in all that!

This little painting caps a great week for me! I began it as a demo today in the workshop on daily painting I've been leading all week. The workshop was great--the first one I've given about daily painting and I look forward to doing it again. There was a wonderful group of people in the class. Their enthusiasm and openness fueled my own. I am grateful!

A week ago I posted a drawing of this subject, "Ya Think?". I guess doing it in paint means a more "serious" title! This scene is taken from a visit to a great new space here in Bend, the TBD Loft which is affiliated with a talented design agency, TBD. It was a show of the work of young creatives who are just beginning to exhibit. Wonderful to see them supported in their work.

Working at the gallery and needing to paint, so here's the result. It is so good to work from life! I love taking advantage of all that using photographs allows in painting, but the challenge of seeing a three dimensional scene and translating it to two, and finding the color (!) is so invigorating. It sharpens my senses in a different way.
