I just had this urge to paint with acrylics! Besides the fact that my little dog got into my mineral spirits last week and was one sick puppy (he's fine now, thank God!!), I needed to try something different--and it definitely felt very much that way!! I'm going to play with them. I like that the brush makes a mark that "holds", but, then again, I miss the mooshiness of the oil paint. We'll see what happens!

This painting is inspired by Mike, one of the students in the Thursday night drawing class I'm teaching. I say "inspired" because I didn't quite catch him in this painting. I might try it again. Frankly, this isn't the result I hoped for when I began the piece. I feel like it just doesn't have some kind of cohesiveness I want--I'm not sure how to name it. The thought came to mind when I decided it was time to stop that this painting seems to be a reflection of how my life has felt for a number of months--sort of a lack of focus with so many things to be trying to do at once, a lack of a firm base, staying on the surface of things while trying to keep up with everything I'm supposed to be doing. The painting has a vagueness about it that I don't care for. Interesting to me how all these things are connected! I get to take a little R&R time this weekend--hope to explore some of these ideas and get my feet planted firmly under me again!

Today's drawing is of a new artist showing at Tumalo Art Company here in Bend, Oregon, Barbara. She exhibits encaustic paintings which are wonderfully textured and carefully composed. I don't know alot about the technique, but what I have learned from her makes me realize that it is a difficult one to master. Click on Tumalo Art Company to see her work.

Just a note to clarify this series of faces--it came to me to do these drawings as a way to be able to keep posting 5 days a week (about!) while I am deeply involved in an illustration project. The project is going well--it is about 100 pieces and I will be finished with the bulk of it by the end of this month. AND THEN I CAN PAINT AGAIN!! Meanwhile I am enjoying this.
