This is a painting I did this past winter.  It is one of my favorites:  we were in Vancouver, BC just having left the Vancouver Art Gallery on a cold, clear day not long after Christmas.

Also, I have just got a new website up:  www.vickishuck.com.  I have been taking a class through our local community college on building a website using Wordpress.  It was great for someone like me who wants to have something they can easily update and who doesn't really know anything about html and all that!  The instructor, Matt Farrell, was great.  He hosts websites, designs them and teaches.  You can look into his work at www.levitationwebsitedesign.com.  Anyway, my site will be tweaked and changed, but for now it is functional and I am thrilled!  Hope you visit it!!

"Winter Morning on Minnesota Street" #2

I've been working on this larger version of the painting I posted Sunday. It still shows "our cold winter light" that we have here in Oregon, but I just didn't want it to be so full of grays. Though there are lots of neutrals in this painting, I am definitely happier with the color. After photographing the painting, I saw a change I want to make--softening up the two women in the distance--well, maybe! Any thoughts?

Well, this has been an interesting experience!! I am staying at a friend's condo in Portland, OR and decided to try a painting of the view from one of her windows. What a challenge! I have a new respect for people who paint these kinds of subjects! It's been a fairy cloudy day so I was glad when the sun came out and there was some contrast to work with. I can see that it would be good to repeat the experience, but most likely with a different view. We'll see about that!

I am teaching all this week and don't know if I'm going to get much painting done, so I thought I'd just post something I did awhile back--last August, I believe. It always is interesting to me to go back to something and see how I feel about it later. It passes. But it's interesting, too, for me, to see things I've become aware of since I painted this piece!

"The Pink Backpack #2" (sold)

8"x6"
Oil on Board
$100 plus $10 domestic s/h

It was a good experience ot visit this again and try to work more with the composition and to figure out what to do with the color shapes to make up the background. This one feels like it has a better sense of depth and the colors feel a bit cleaner. I decided to leave out the flyer-covered telephone pole on the right this time--I really like it as an element, but it just seemed to distract from the main figure.

"Just Watching"

8"x6"
Oil on Board

This is not today's painting! Today's painting just was going nowhere! I will either try to resolve it or do another version, or both, but I decided to dig into my reserves for today's post. I painted this last August--I remember being so surprised when I finished it! I see some things I'd change now, but on the whole, I'm pretty happy with it. I was struck by contrast of her aloofness and his awkwardness--and glad I wasn't sitting at the same table!

"Weekend Market" (sold)

6"x12"
Oil on Board
Besides teaching, this is what I have been spending the last two days on and didn't finish it in time to photograph it yesterday to post. So! Today will, hopefully, see two posts! This painting is another scene from the Summer Festival here in Bend last July. It was a challenge to me to find a balance in how much information to put down and where--I could have had two different focal areas. I had a difficult time at the beginning because I didn't have the drawing down correctly and didn't realize it until well into painting! Also, working from photos definitely has its own set of issues. I need more time to live with it, but at this point I feel I've brought this painting to a conclusion that I am pretty happy with.

"Sunday Morning Rain" (sold)

6"x8"
Oil on Board
$100 includes domestic s/h

Alot of people assume that Oregon is a "rainy" state and are surprised to find out that nearly have of the state is high desert country. Well, this painting is from the quarter of the state that perpetuates its soggy reputation. Portland is in the lush, green and very beautiful Willamette Valley. This is a subject I've never painted before--the paper boxes on the wet reflective street. I found myself getting lost in the reflections--it was a good exercise for working on seeing color shapes as opposed to objects and I'd like to repeat it!
Also, there is a new artist I've added to the list of daily painters --Terry Rafferty who also was at Carol Marine's workshop. Hope you will check out her work!
