This little Westie is one of the dogs we have all enjoyed at one of our local dog parks--he's quite the guy, loves to run and always up for chasing or being chased.

I met this guy yesterday at the dog park.  He was so handsome!  I was impressed by the dignified and noble way he carried himself.  Animals seem to be able to carry that off so well without being self-conscious about it!!!

I call this painting "upstart" because it is of Molly (on the right) who has been an "only dog" for close to a couple of years before the puppy, Huck (on the left),  invaded her perfect life this winter.  The good news is that now BOTH dogs have a perfect life!  Like yesterday's post, these are a couple of regulars at the dog park we often visit.

The painting is on a cradled panel as shown below and does not need framing, though it can be framed.

I have wanted to paint this guy for quite some time, but haven't because I would get so sad looking at my photo!  I would just think how forlorn he felt to me, waiting for his person to come back.  Now of course I don't know if the dog was going through that at all!  Today, though, the image just felt right to work with.  I painted it on a 3/4 inch cradled board so it can be framed or not.  It is shown below hanging as is on a wall.  This painting was an interesting study in grays, going from mixing them with quinacridone red and pthalo green to ultramarine blue and cad yellow deep, to ultramarine blue and cad red light and then cad red medium.

This is a commission I finished a couple of days ago.  It was a bittersweet painting to do!  Abby was a much loved dog who passed away awhile back.  She would sit at this window waiting for her owner to come home.  It was hard not to keep thinking about that while painting this, but it also made it that much more special.  I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to sometimes do these paintings that are enriching to those who commission them or receive them as gifts.  It's the best of both worlds--loving to paint and painting something that is loved.

I was inspired here by the movement of the horse and the morning light. This is one of those subjects I'd like to work with on a bit larger painting! I have been trying out a different brand of brush to see what it's like--a Princeton synthetic "mongoose", kind of like Windsor/Newton's. It works so beautifully! I love the brights. They are a bit spendy! Sure seems true, though, that you get what you pay for!

I loved the confidence these kids showed on the horses and kind of envied their experience! This little painting was a challenge--spent alot of time on proportion and the feel of the movement. Sometimes it's really difficult to get these things right on such a small scale, and, for me, when I'm working with the figure or another live creature, it's important to do that.

I admire the single-mindedness of animals--they are just so into the moment. I wish I spent more time like that! But that is one thing I love about painting--it focuses my energy and thoughts often just drift away. It's a welcome rest from my self!

Awhile into the agility competition at last weekend's dog show, some of these pups would suddenly be distracted in the middle of what they were supposed to be doing--hey! someone else was here before me!! who was it? sniff. . .sniff--it was so funny and wonderful to see how the animal was just so present to his world and how it didn't care a bit about "winning" and all that. Meanwhile, the judge looks on. . .
