What a joy it was to paint this handsome Sheltie, Oliver!  He's just over a year old, but appears older to me because he looks so regal--just a stunning dog!  Shelties are formally known as Shetland Sheepdogs and are small to medium-size, hardworking little guys.

KC is another one of the dogs that we see alot of at the dog park.  He is so much fun to watch--he doesn't run, he "gallumphs" and I think he could chase balls all day if he had the chance.  A very sweet and huge standard poodle that we all have a soft spot for.  I like using limited palettes and I had been given some Maimeri Puro oils that I used for this: primary cyan, primary yellow and primary red.  I also used radiant white and ivory black.

I met this guy yesterday at the dog park.  He was so handsome!  I was impressed by the dignified and noble way he carried himself.  Animals seem to be able to carry that off so well without being self-conscious about it!!!

I am away from home and studio and had acrylics with me but no oils, so--an opportunity to try them out again.  A nice change!  I would love to learn to work with acrylics the way I work with oils.  Then again, it would just be good to see what acrylics do differently and to have fun with that.  I didn't even think about underpainting until the painting was about finished--would have been fun!

There was a beautiful little painting by Debbie Miller in today's Daily Painter Gallery (www.dailypainter.com) of a dog that inspired me to do another dog painting today myself!  This little guy is a Westie puppy that comes to play at the dog park in the summer.  He's about a year and a half old and full of life!

This painting is a commission I've been working on the past few days.  In this painting, I used a white I haven't tried before:  Gamblin's Flake White Replacement.  If I've ever used Flake White, it was years ago, so I'm not sure what it's supposed to be like, but this was a great alternative to the Titanium and Radiant Whites I've been using alot of.  It's really thick and holds the brush stroke, very easy to use a painting knife with. 

I look and see I haven't posted since Monday and am wondering what else I've been doing, because it hasn't been posting paintings!!!  Actually, illustration work and working on getting a website going has been taking up alot of time this week.  I'm looking forward to getting back to my easel very soon!

This is a commission I finished a couple of days ago.  It was a bittersweet painting to do!  Abby was a much loved dog who passed away awhile back.  She would sit at this window waiting for her owner to come home.  It was hard not to keep thinking about that while painting this, but it also made it that much more special.  I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to sometimes do these paintings that are enriching to those who commission them or receive them as gifts.  It's the best of both worlds--loving to paint and painting something that is loved.

Oh what a day!!! I worked on a painting I'd started yesterday--scraped it off more times that I remember and finally decided to paint my next to favorite male in my household--my little dog, Tobey!! I took some pics of him yesterday right after he'd been groomed and was playing with some other dogs. Such a great little creature!!! I'm blessed. I decided I'd give it to my absolutely favorite male in the household for Valentine's Day.
