The word "determination" kept going through my mind as I painted this--the horse was determined to lose the rider and the rider determined to stay on for the full 8 seconds!  I don't really remember the result, just the lesson!

Yes, I'm on a cowboy and rodeo kick these days! I love drawing and painting subjects that feel full of energy. On this one, I particularly had fun with the palette knife as it accentuated the movement and the explosion of energy as the horse tries to get rid of that rider.

It felt good to have enough painting time today to actually get this little oil sketch done. In my ideal life, there would be long uninterrupted stretches for painting--I wouldn't stop until my body clock said "enough for now". However, until that happens, I'll just keep on, brushstroke by brushstroke!

Today's post is of another painting for the Ranch Life and Rodeo Show that (I confess!) I painted last week! I had done a small acrylic of this subject and loved the shapes and energy of the horse and rider, so decided to try it in a larger format. It was fun and interesting to me, too, how different it came out in the oils--much more subdued colors than the acrylics. I am still enamored with the subject--I could see doing it as a block print and a drawing, also. NOTE: this painting is available after June 30.

Good to be back! It's been a great two weeks of meeting a new grandchild, visiting and playing with the others and finishing up work for the Ranch Life and Rodeo show in which this block print will be included. It's been refreshing to do some traveling and get some inspiration!

Finished! I am much happier with this than I thought I would be yesterday! I was thinking that the lines showing the highlights on the horse were ruining the effect of the large black shape, but it seems to have balanced out fine with the rest of the detail. I was also not happy with the difference in the marks made--the area of dust had one kind and the horse had another. I think that putting similar marks in those sections gave the image more unity. It's all such a learning experience!

I printed this on a creamy paper--Rives Lightweight. I love that paper. It almost feels like fabric and takes the ink beautifully.

My computer is back--what a learning experience! Anyway, one thing I did notice is how much I got done without being able to be on a computer so much! Hm-m-m-m! Like finishing up this painting for the show in May! I have gotten so used to doing these in the 6"x6" format, that going larger was a challenge! It's hard to remember to use bigger brushes!

The subject of this painting is pretty appropriate today! LIFE has been a wild ride the past couple of days--one day brings the good news of being included on the Daily Painters Gallery website and the next, yesterday, brings the sad news of having to put down our deeply loved dog, Murphy. Needless to say, I feel like I'm on that horse--but I am hanging on! Murphy was a joy and a blessing and all shall be well. For the moment, my concentration isn't too great and I see things that need to be changed in this painting--I'll reshoot after I make them!

Trying to keep it loose today, to see how far suggestion goes--as someone in my critique group said, "Not having to prove to the world that I can draw" (or something like that!). I don't mean that I don't value drawing skills, the ability to make a faithful representation--I teach how to do that and believe that it's not only a necessary building block, but an art in itself. What I am referring to is the tendency to have to put all the information in, to be a slave to unnecessary detail. I am trying to learn that!

It's too late in the evening for me to be trying to think up a better title for this one! I would like to say something profound tonight about the experience of painting so often and how much I am getting out of it, but right now, all that comes to mind is how good it feels to move the paint around and that I just love the whole thing! Life is good!!

Well, looking at yesterday's painting made me want try this again! I'm glad I did--just doing this second one has helped me to see what's not working with the first. I wasn't sure if this composition would work--I didn't know if the horse's head and front legs would just lead you out of the picture, but I thought I'd see what happens, and I think it works well. I also like how this horse has more of a feeling of being off the ground. It was fun! I just might have to rework yesterday's painting!

Sisters (Oregon) has a great rodeo each summer--I used to go to them growing up and it was great to be reminded how much fun they are. So much energy! And this was fun to paint, but I think I'd like to try it a little larger since I seem to want to include so much detail! Or I could try to leave it out, I suppose--it would probably be harder to do THAT!
