The word "determination" kept going through my mind as I painted this--the horse was determined to lose the rider and the rider determined to stay on for the full 8 seconds!  I don't really remember the result, just the lesson!

I haven't done a rodeo painting for awhile and enjoyed this.  One thing I really like about doing them is working with subjects in motion.  It's interesting to me how I can see my work changing in this, much looser.  For the past few years, brights have been my brush of choice, but now am branching out and adding rounds and filberts to my bag of tricks!.  Back in the 90's I went through a long period when only flats would do!

Today I finished this painting of the team-ropers for next month's show. It was fun--but quite a challenge! Actually, it was WORK!! I think I get pretty spoiled by doing the little paintings. Anyway, I feel like I'm still finding my way when it comes to backgrounds on these rodeo paintings. They can be such a distraction from the subject, but I like the way they add to the story, so I really want to work it out. I'm very pleased with the movement and dynamism in this painting. This photo has somehow been unevenly lit; I'll switch it out when I take a new one!

Another painting for the Ranch Life and Rodeo Show. I have a love/hate relationship with this painting! I am fine with how it turned out, but got so frustrated while doing a little painting of this subject!! Just kind of tired of little brush strokes, etc. It is good for me in that it is making me rethink the kind of subjects I want to do--or at least HOW I want to do them--for this small format. I love working with this size, but there is definitely an art of doing so!

Finished! I am much happier with this than I thought I would be yesterday! I was thinking that the lines showing the highlights on the horse were ruining the effect of the large black shape, but it seems to have balanced out fine with the rest of the detail. I was also not happy with the difference in the marks made--the area of dust had one kind and the horse had another. I think that putting similar marks in those sections gave the image more unity. It's all such a learning experience!

I printed this on a creamy paper--Rives Lightweight. I love that paper. It almost feels like fabric and takes the ink beautifully.

My computer is back--what a learning experience! Anyway, one thing I did notice is how much I got done without being able to be on a computer so much! Hm-m-m-m! Like finishing up this painting for the show in May! I have gotten so used to doing these in the 6"x6" format, that going larger was a challenge! It's hard to remember to use bigger brushes!

It feels like forever since I've posted! I have had to really close myself off from everything except the illustration work which I will finish this weekend and ship Monday. Yay! Meanwhile, I am itching to get back to painting!

I saw some work by a Bend artist, Judy Hoiness, on this "Yupo". I loved how she incorporated the paint and the drawing and have been wanting to try it myself, so here it is. If you aren't familiar with the Yupo, it is a sheet of polypropolene, very slick. The watercolor just sits there till it dries, you can wipe it off while it's wet. When it's dry, it takes graphite really well. I have fixed it with a few layers of sprayed acrylic coating. This is an interesting surface. I'm curious to learn more about it.

Well this was another go with the acrylics--so different than the oils! I like the energetic look and the bright colors that I end up with, but it is very hard to get used to how quickly they dry. It seems like you really have to learn to make quick color decisions--maybe that would be a good thing!
