I just finished this painting which is intended for next month's show. I am amazed at the colors you can get using such a simple palette--especially when I look at yesterday's painting knowing they were created with the same 4 colors! I've used alizaron yellow, permanent crimson, ultramarine blue and radiant white.

Well, I believe this is finished and it feels great! I am so used to painting the little pieces, that it is hard not to finish things in a day or so. However, it takes as long as it takes. . . I think that most of the challenges I faced with this painting were mainly because of it being larger than what I'm accustomed to--it was hard not to be all over the painting at the same time like you can be (almost) with a little piece. And then parts of it would be nearly dry when I'd go back to them after a day or so and it sometimes felt like beginning all over again. One thing that was helpful here for me, was using a limited palette. It wasn't hard to remix colors and to find the harmonies since I had just a few colors forming the foundation of the painting.

It's been awhile!! I am working hard on the illustration project, but managing to get a little painting in, also. This one is "version #2" of my previous post. I just never was quite happy with that painting. A big part of the problem was the oiling out--I'm not quite sure what to do with that, but really don't like it!! I used a different medium with this painting--Winsor & Newton "Artists' Painting Medium" that was described as good for that problem. It seemed to help keep the paint looking fresh and moist. I'd be VERY interested in hearing how other painters deal with this issue!

This little painting is from a jumper and horse show event called the High Desert Classics which is a benefit for a local youth organization and goes for a couple of weeks. Riders and competitors come from all over the States and, though, I am not a "horse-person", it's just beautiful to watch.

This is Tobey. He's an 8 1/2 week old bichon that joined our family last Friday. He is so much fun!!! Needless to say, it's been a little hard to keep my mind on painting the past few days!
