I painted a portrait of this lovely lady last April (posted here on April 21) and was asked to do another one so both of her children could have one.  I was given two photos of her to work with for the 1st painting and chose what I liked best from each to make a painting I thought would work well.  Then the opportunity came to paint the second one and I ended up taking what I hadn't used before to paint this one.  It has made for two distinctly different portraits--not only in appearance, but also in mood.  Fortunately, everyone is happy with both and I had a great experience doing them.

This was so fun, I could paint it again and again!  It's one of three paintings of the daughters of a woman who has a framing business here in Bend (Framer's Corner).  It is such a challenge to do these little things when you really want them to look like the person you're portraying--when it works, it feels like a true gift from above!

I'm not sure I've ever done such a little oil painting! It was fun--in big part because of the subject. Also, I decided to try working on a black ground. I had to think about the painting of it a little differently as far as putting values down. I was surprised that the color wasn't modified much by the ground. In a way, it reminds me of doing block prints as you start with the dark background and bring out the lights. Once your brain starts thinking that way, it feels really natural. I look forward to trying this again!

The subject of this painting is a man named J. Chester Armstrong. He is a sculptor primarily of animals and begins his carving using chainsaws! I got to watch him demonstrate this last Saturday and it was really fascinating. After he gets the basic form carved with the saws, he uses a variety of tools to finish his work creating beautiful, flowing figures of animals. He is incredibly intense and passionate about his art. He is one of those sculptors who really lets the piece of wood he's using "release" the form. The photo I used as a reference had him in mid-sentence, but the feel of that expression really captured his personality for me. I am still counting those faces that I set out to do last fall! This is number 37 of 50. Once I was able to paint again, I let them go . . .but still want to finish out the 50!

Another artist I'd like to bring attention to is Dana Cooper. She found my blog the other day, then I found hers' and I am glad I did! Please visit her blog!

I couldn't stand it!! I had to do a painting today--forget the work, I'll get caught up!! I was really inspired this morning by Deb Schmit's work. She'd left a note on my blog and I went to her's and love her paintings. Her link is listed on the right with the other daily painter's links.

Well, this doesn't look as much like Laura as yesterday's study, but I'm pleased with the life the painting has.

What caught my attention was her youth, her beauty, her look (not showing are the short skirt, black tights, big bag), the confidence she had in being the center of attention of her group--definitely in charge. She made me think of being young in the '70's and remembering people like her that I really envied and thought I ought to be like. WOW!! Am I glad to be "old"!!

Another face from the retreat a week and a half ago. I'm enjoying doing these--they are like a meditation in themselves as I paint. This is not a portrait as much as it is an impression done from memory. She had such a serene countenance. I guess it doesn't really show that well in this painting, though! In doing this, I got more into just playing with color and the brushstrokes.
