I've been putting all my painting time into an illustration job, so decided to post something from the "archives".  I chose this one as it represents some wishful thinking for me--some summer weather and a break from the very wet and cool spring we've had--especially for the little veggies in our garden!

"Walk #2"

Image size:  5.5" h x 19"w
Graphite on Bristol Board

My apologies for the not so great photo!  I sent the drawing off to be framed without realizing my photo was so lacking!  Hopefully you get the idea.  This drawing, as in my previous "Walk" drawing was inspired by the many photos I have of people doing just that--walking!  I really like taking the subjects out of their context and seeing what is made new as I put them together.  I like to see the relationships that are created by doing this.  Below is a photo of the 1st "Walk" drawing.

This drawing is also available.  You can contact me for a photo of the framed drawing and for purchase information.

This is the third of a series of paintings I've been (slowly!) working on.  The others were posted on April 30.  I have liked working with just the figure.  I like exploring the idea of the person without a context.  I think about how we pass each other throughout a day, coming into each other's existence for a split second, maybe a little more, but then pass and never see each other again.  These paintings are a way to explore that and, also, a way to prolong the moment.

OK, I have to admit that though this looks just like the cat I'm painting, her stare kind of gives me the willies!  Maybe it's because I just don't spend alot of time around cats as I'm very allergic to them, and I'm just not used to how they look at you SO knowingly and with such attitude!  Graceful and beautiful, this long-haired calico truly owns her world!

These ladies were having an early dinner on one of our sunny spring evenings recently.  I was drawn by the light and the interaction between the two women--the one is so attentive.  I wish I knew what they were talking about!

"At the Riverside Market" final version

16"x20"
Oil on Panel
Framed:  $1350
Contact me for photo of framed painting and/or to purchase

It's been brought to my attention that I didn't post a photo of this painting after I finished it--thank you Stephanie!  I love this painting and, even more, I love the experience of doing it!  Spending time at the Riverside Market, sketching, taking photos and speaking with the people who work there and hang out there has been an absolute delight.  It's made me realize that creating art about subjects I get some sort of involvement with is so much more satisfiying than what I've been experiencing for awhile.  I know that there will always be the paintings I do of people I don't know, but I am promising myself that I am going to take more time to create connections with my subjects before I put them into paint!

So, along those lines. . .
another artist, Janice Druian, and myself are beginning a joint project documenting changes going on in three different agricultural areas here in Oregon and northern California.  We are interviewing people who live in these areas and doing paintings of them and the land they live in.  The paintings will first be shown next April at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, Oregon.  Stay tuned as this project develops!!

This painting is of a scene at Tumalo Art Company one opening night.  I enjoyed the interaction of these figures and the stances of the two in front.  I just wonder what they were talking about!
