LIfe Drawing Class--"Laurie"

watercolor on multi-media paper

Laurie was our model again at the life-drawing lab today. I enjoyed experimenting with the watercolors. These life-drawing sessions are such a great break from painting (though I am REALLY missing painting!!). I see them as an opportunity to experiment and just play around in ways I can't do that often in my studio. Being surrounded by a group of people all enjoying the same thing is a big plus, too!

Guest Artist--Gary Vincent, "Breeze"

48"x60"
Acrylic on Canvas
Sold

I will be focusing on illustration work for the next three weeks so won't be able to do as many little paintings as I would like. So instead, I will be posting wonderful pieces by other artists from here in Bend, along with what I might have time for.

This painting is one of Gary's favorites. He derives inspiration for alot of his work from aspens. They are particularly stunning in the autumn as they turn beautiful yellow and orange tones that have an electric blue sky as background. This painting makes me think of how the leaves are almost like glitter as they catch the sunlight while being ruffled by the breezes.

This scene brings back some fond memories--sitting on the balcony at the Ore House in Santa Fe, having a glass of wine and dinner after a day at the workshop with Carol Marine. It was a great day, and then on top of that, this incredible light as the sun set and gave the cathedral such a gorgeous glow.

Guest Artist's Work: Out of Gary's Sketchbook #1

graphite on drawing paper
9"x12"
NFS

I had to work on illustrations today, so rather than post those, I thought I'd post a sketch that my husband, Gary Vincent, did today of a creek in the forest. I love his work. I love the strength and boldness and the spontaneity and freedom of his sketchbook drawings.

We went to Portland (Oregon) over the weekend to hear John Prine and to get a little "city life"--nice! The weather was beautiful! This is a litle scene from Sunday morning as we were coming down out of the Albina District heading south. I found out that "Stumptown" is the nickname for more than just Portland--there's Guerneville, CA, Whitefish, MT, a town in North Carolina and others.

sketch for commission

6"x18"
watercolor
NFS

This is a rough sketch I did today for what is to be a larger oil painting of the bluffs at Red Cloud, Nebraska that I've been commissioned to do. I'm looking forward to it! This sketch is a warm-up for me to get the feel of the subject. I used to paint large landscapes in a totally different palette and style than I work with now, so I'm really excited to see how I will do a larger landscape 15 years later!

I enjoyed playing with watercolor today at the life drawing lab. It felt very freeing going in there to just see what would happen, no expectations! Hmmmmm, I'd like more of that in my life! :)

I guess there's a chance I'll be looking at this painting in the next few days and see something I ought to change, but for now I'm considering it finished! It is definitely one of my favorites! I love this composition and wouldn't be surprised if I painted it again. My husband, Gary, had a really good insight as I was showing it to him. He was commenting on all the neutrals in it while I was thinking I was seeing alot of color in them. He said that, yes, I paint alot so my "rods and cones are all jazzed up" and are really sensitive to color, so I might be seeing more than people who aren't used to focusing on it so much. I am going to be keeping that in mind in future paintings.

"Alicia: 25 minute pose"

graphite on paper
approx. 20"x16"
$75--contact me if you're interested in purchasing this drawing through Paypal

I've signed up for a life-drawing lab and yesterday was my first trip to it. It was like going back 30 years--just the feeling of being in the college life-drawing classes, it was like I never left, except, of course, that I am sorely out of the practice of drawing from life. I hope it improves my painted pieces.

My husband I visited this amazing place a couple of weeks ago. It is chock full of "stuff" that Sue and the co-owner find interesting--and lots of other people, too! I've been leary about painting it just because of that--so much to put in a painting. But then I know, too, that's part of the charm of the place! Gary had brought this book on Matisse to her attention: it had some pages in it that are double-printed, very strange! This painting is an odd size, and I do have a nice frame that it fits into.

I have painted Liz a couple of times before, but still love this subject. She was at the train station in Portland, OR this summer, having come in on the train from Chicago. I snapped a few shots of her and then asked permission to, saying that she didn't have to pose or anything. She was very generous and allowed me to take pictures of her--and then she began to pose. . .

"Sunday Breakfast Conversation at the Pancake House"

This painting was inspired by my nephew and his wife as we had a family breakfast at the local "Original Pancake House" last Sunday morning. I liked the composition of this subject, but am not quite happy with the color yet. I spent quite awhile trying to get what I wanted, but finally ran out of time! I may work on this some more. . .
