The lyrics "hot fun in the summer time. . ." keeps going through my head!  Well, hot or not here in Bend, this was definitely fun to paint!  Everytime I look at their faces I smile.  I enjoyed, too, the opportunity to really slather on the paint for the fountain effect.  The scene is the fountain at Waterfront Park in Portland, OR.

"Study For Three Graces" (sold)

8"x6" unframed, 14"x12" framed

These 3 little girls are playing in a fountain at Portland (Oregon's) Waterfront Park.  I am getting ready to do a 30"x22" painting of them so decided to try it small first!  What fun to paint!  What a subject!

One of my favorite places for subject matter is at Union Station in Portland, OR.  I love the light and the reflections that seem to be everywhere and the variety of people I see.  I like going to a public place and being able to just snap away to get my reference photos, but at the station, I feel so obvious and so aware of security issues that I don't do that much anymore.  I ask permission and am often turned down--oh all those people who could've be immortalized!!  (:

We went to Portland (Oregon) over the weekend to hear John Prine and to get a little "city life"--nice! The weather was beautiful! This is a litle scene from Sunday morning as we were coming down out of the Albina District heading south. I found out that "Stumptown" is the nickname for more than just Portland--there's Guerneville, CA, Whitefish, MT, a town in North Carolina and others.

"In the Union Station Lobby"

6"x6"
Oil on Gessoboard
NFS

This is a painting from my trip to Portland. The woman's name is Liz--unfortunately I didn't think to ask anymore about her than her name! She came in off the train from Chicago and that's about all I know! One thing I learned this week is how much is added to the painting for me when I have a bit of conversation with the subjects rather than just take pictures and go. That was a good lesson! This painting had an unhappy accident after I photographed it--it accidentally was scraped down past the gesso, so there's no fixing it! I expect I'll do another version. She deserves it!

I'm still in Portland, having a great time being a tourist and just taking lots and lots of pictures that I'm excited to see turn into paintings. It turned out to be a gorgeous sunny and hot day, perfect for people-watching as everyone was soaking it up. Too much fun! These little drawings are just a couple of rough sketches I did along with all the photos.

Well, this has been an interesting experience!! I am staying at a friend's condo in Portland, OR and decided to try a painting of the view from one of her windows. What a challenge! I have a new respect for people who paint these kinds of subjects! It's been a fairy cloudy day so I was glad when the sun came out and there was some contrast to work with. I can see that it would be good to repeat the experience, but most likely with a different view. We'll see about that!

"Seen at the Byways Cafe" (sold)

11"x14"
Oil on Board
NFS at this time

This has been a blessed day. I opened my emails this morning to have received so much encouragement from some of you after yesterday's post. Jeff Boron (visit his site through the link on the right) commisserated as he said how as he and his wife, Linny, are getting ready for a show, too, that "fun paintings turn into nightmares and the bad spirits are having a party"!! A couple of things came to mind: one is seeing and appreciating the community of bloggers and the other is seeing that this enterprise takes some humility and acceptance of where I am--can't be anywhere else!

Anyway, this painting is finished and I am grateful for the opportunity to do it! It is from a visit to this cafe in Portland, OR.

Also, I am adding some other bloggers you might want to look up to my list of daily painters. Karin Jurick was my first inspiration to do this work--she is truly amazing in her portrayal of everyday events and people. Laine Lea is working with colored pencil and exploring different subjects. Don Gray has an exquisite series of ocean waves he's been working on along with other subjects. Lyn Feudner has some lovely watercolors of cactus and fruit. Craig and Tanya Amberson have fun paintings of animals--lots of dogs--and they offer some of the proceeds of their sales to helping animals. Mary Sheehan Winn works in a variety of media creating still lifes and landscapes.

This is an older painting I am posting today as I haven't had time to do much this week with the teaching. This painting is from a visit to a restaurant in Portland, OR, the M&J Cafe. I painted this about a year ago. It's nice to see something I haven't looked closely at for awhile--and to enjoy it!!

"Left Foot Forward"

8"x6"
Oil on Board
The Cadillac Cafe in Portland, OR is the site of this painting. It was hard to stop--noodling is one of my favorite things, I guess. Thanks to my best critique-er, my husband and artist Gary (Vincent), I managed not to overdo it!

"Sunday Morning Rain" (sold)

6"x8"
Oil on Board
$100 includes domestic s/h

Alot of people assume that Oregon is a "rainy" state and are surprised to find out that nearly have of the state is high desert country. Well, this painting is from the quarter of the state that perpetuates its soggy reputation. Portland is in the lush, green and very beautiful Willamette Valley. This is a subject I've never painted before--the paper boxes on the wet reflective street. I found myself getting lost in the reflections--it was a good exercise for working on seeing color shapes as opposed to objects and I'd like to repeat it!
Also, there is a new artist I've added to the list of daily painters --Terry Rafferty who also was at Carol Marine's workshop. Hope you will check out her work!
