I just returned a few days ago from a trip to the east coast.  I'd hoped to do some watercolor sketches on the trip, but just didn't get to it--lots of photographs, though, and lots of ink sketches of people in the airports!  As the title says, this study is from Le Pain Quotidien in New Canaan.  I loved the light in there and am looking forward to doing an oil painting of this subject.  I had to look up "quotidian" (qotidiEn in French) and it means "daily". . ."our daily bread". . .how nice!

"Coffee and News at the Riverside Market"

14x18"
Oil on Panel
Available--Please contact me for purchase information

What a great subject the Riverside Market is!  It's old, a bit funky, has personality, chairs and tables that don't match and all that wonderful natural light streaming in!  I imagine this isn't the last painting I will be doing from there.  However, it IS one of the last I'll be putting up on the Daily Painters Gallery for awhile.  Though I will keep posting on my blog, as of the 13th, I am taking a hiatus from the DPG to keep sane this summer while I am doing illustration work, teaching and doing some traveling.  I will be painting but without the pressure of feeling like I need to be doing "daily paintings".  Anyone who has been watching my blog has probably observed that I've been having a hard time getting something posted everyday anyway!  Now I just don't have to feel the guilt!  (-:

So, subscribe to follow my blog if you'd like to keep up with my new work this summer!  I will be going to the east coast soon and am looking forward to getting inspired in NYC, then to Vancouver BC where I always come away with lots of subjects I want to paint!

Is it hot yet?!  I love the light in this--same time of year as "Cannery Row", my previous post (early November) on the California coast.  It is so easy to see why it's a draw for artists!

It feels like it's been forever since I've done a little painting just to do a "daily painting"!!  Between preparing for a show and lots of illustration work, painting these little guys has gotten lost in the shuffle!  So, for getting my feet wet again, I chose a scene from a trip we took that included a walk along Cannery Row in Monterey, CA.  Naturally, my mind was filled with Steinbeck and also with trying to imagine what life was like there back when it was a working fishing area.  Even though that all seems so in the past, there is still a feel of an area that has lagged behind a bit, kind of touristy in a pleasant, kitchy way that has a charm of its own.
