"Waiting For Her Friend" (sold)

18"x12"
Oil on Board

This paintng is of a young woman I saw in Portland, OR standing outside of an art supply store.  I was immediately taken by her outfit and her stance.  I have tried to paint her before over a year ago, but it just didn't work.  This time it did.  It's interesting and reassuring, too, to see how I could solve a problem today that I couldn't figure out a year ago!  YES!  I've also created a drawing of her which I love.  You can go here to see it.

One of my favorite places for subject matter is at Union Station in Portland, OR.  I love the light and the reflections that seem to be everywhere and the variety of people I see.  I like going to a public place and being able to just snap away to get my reference photos, but at the station, I feel so obvious and so aware of security issues that I don't do that much anymore.  I ask permission and am often turned down--oh all those people who could've be immortalized!!  (:

I loved the dramatic shadows and the warm light of this scene. My goal with the painting was to get my statement down quickly and not overwork it. I maybe should have softened the edges of the shadows a bit. . .

Here's the larger version of Kaitlin texting. My past few paintings have been experiments with a different color palette--adding different reds, blues, pthalo green and alot more white than I am accustomed to. By the time I finished this painting, I was missing my regular palette of colors alot! I do like the softness of the pastel colors on this painting. I also have another view of Kaitlin walking down the street that I've begun with my traditional palette, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it will be different.

"Alicia: 25 minute pose"

graphite on paper
approx. 20"x16"
$75--contact me if you're interested in purchasing this drawing through Paypal

I've signed up for a life-drawing lab and yesterday was my first trip to it. It was like going back 30 years--just the feeling of being in the college life-drawing classes, it was like I never left, except, of course, that I am sorely out of the practice of drawing from life. I hope it improves my painted pieces.

"Young Dancer"

24"x8"
Oil on Board
for purchase information contact River Bend Fine Art Gallery
I took a picture of this girl at a local dance studio awhile back. I was so struck by her grace and litheness! She has two younger sisters that also reflect that, along with the innocence of the young! I am preparing for a show for April and as I looked at what I have for it already, I saw that the subjects in the paintings are all female, so have decided to have that be the theme of my show. I then went looking through my scrap for inspiration and the photo of this young woman resurfaced--needless to say, I was very happy about that! By the way, click on the photo to get a detailed view!

This little painting is a "rerun"! Just so much happening the past few days that I haven't been able to have enough concentrated time to finish up a painting, so I decided to bring out one of my favorites that I painted over a year ago. That's the upside of busy right now--revisiting a painting that really brought me alot of joy in the doing of it. I loved catching her in mid-step. . .

This is a painting of a girl I saw in the park the other day. I was intrigued by the challenge of trying to figure out how to paint her skin tones. She was so fair and in the shade, everything had a cool cast. I may try this again!! It's kind of funny, this has such a 70's feel to me--maybe it's the long blond hair. . .

This is one of those little paintings that I had to scrape off, start again, scrape off, start again. . .and on and on. I has a tough time with the color and tried many different things, but am very happy with this. I have started a larger version--I just love her pose and her look!

I was attracted to the light in this scene when I did the drawing of it a week ago and wanted to try a painting of it. I'm not sure this painting is exactly what I was after, but it's a step along the way!

This young woman was waiting to take her turn dancing in a small recital when I took the photo of her and her sisters. I hope to paint them--when I can get back to the easel!

I can't help but to acknowledge the events of this day! Our nation has chosen for good and I am proud of it!

"Libby" #14 of 50 faces (sold)

image: 6"x6"
graphite on bristol board
I treated myself to a Starbucks coffee today and Libby served me through the drive-up window. I never thought I'd do a drawing or a painting of somebody with such a grin--I always thought it would look too posed or something. But when I looked at my photos, she was just so adorable (and I don't use that word much!) that I had to do it! The full picture of her handing me my cup of coffee looks like it might have to be a painting one of these days!
My frustration with posting these drawings is that I never seem to be able to get them to show up dark enough in value here without making the paper look very dark--and this is whether I scan them on my computer or take a photo of them. If anyone has any ideas about how I can do a better job with this, I'd be happy to hear them!
