"Coffee and Conversation"

6"x6"
Oil on Board
contact River Bend Fine Art Gallery for purchase information

I was going through some unsold paintings and came across a 6"x6" one I did of this subject last spring. I looked at it and thought that maybe I could improve upon it so did it again. It IS definitely an improvement! Much better color, looser, better cropping and use of space. I love the subject. It seems like we rarely see much done about middle-aged people or that affirms commitment past the more romantic phase. This couple had the feel to me of being together through life's ups and downs and I am happy to celebrate that! The location was Sisters Coffee House in Sisters, OR.

"At Townsend's for Tea" (sold)

11"x14" image size
Oil on Board

Finished!! This was so fun to do and I really thank you people who commented on the painting in process--it encouraged me! I used a limited palette on this one, too, though I haven't yet got that alizaron yellow that I used in the first version of it. Sara Winter does beautiful work with a limited paletted and that inspired me to keep trying it. I used alizaron crimson, ultramarine blue, cad lemon and cad yellow light and raw sienna and white. It is so nice the way it keeps the colors working with each other and simplifies the process so much!

"At the Bond Street Teahouse"

5"x7"
oil on Gessoboard

Doing this painting was a source of discoveries for me. First of all, it was done with three colors--alizaron, ultramarine blue, a cadmium yellow and white. I rarely use such a limited palette! I was amazed at the beautiful range of colors I got--hope they show up here! The second thing is the yellow I used. Laura (the one in my drawings and paintings!) was here this past week and left the paint for me that I used in this and the yellow is like nothing I've seen before. She said it was a cadmium yellow, but it has so much depth and absolutely glows! Very different from any cad yellow I've seen. I've got to find out where to get it!!
