I was inspired here by the movement of the horse and the morning light. This is one of those subjects I'd like to work with on a bit larger painting! I have been trying out a different brand of brush to see what it's like--a Princeton synthetic "mongoose", kind of like Windsor/Newton's. It works so beautifully! I love the brights. They are a bit spendy! Sure seems true, though, that you get what you pay for!

This little girl was talking to her horse before they went into their round of competition. It's inspiring to watch the youngsters do this--they are so focused and try so hard. Too, the sport is one of precision and attention to detail--reminds me of watching a ballet.

The morning light, the posture of the rider and the energy of the horse attracted me to this subject. The horses are so beautiful to watch and likewise the riders. I admire their discipline!

I was attracted to the feel of the forward movement and the light in this pose. These drawings have really been great exercises in seeing and creating values! It's almost like you can just keep going deeper and deeper into the subject and fine more variations in the values. I realized I had to finally just set a time limit and say enough!

Taking a little sabbatical from "Daily Painters Gallery" got me out of the habit of posting!! I actually forgot to do it yesterday!

This little painting is a companion piece to my last post for someone whose daughter rides and jumps. I admire how hard these kids work!

It's been awhile!! I am working hard on the illustration project, but managing to get a little painting in, also. This one is "version #2" of my previous post. I just never was quite happy with that painting. A big part of the problem was the oiling out--I'm not quite sure what to do with that, but really don't like it!! I used a different medium with this painting--Winsor & Newton "Artists' Painting Medium" that was described as good for that problem. It seemed to help keep the paint looking fresh and moist. I'd be VERY interested in hearing how other painters deal with this issue!

Another painting from the High Desert Classics. It's such a treat to visit out there. The horses are such strong, beautiful creatures. The competitors range from young girls--haven't seen any boys out there--to "seasoned" pros.

This little painting is from a jumper and horse show event called the High Desert Classics which is a benefit for a local youth organization and goes for a couple of weeks. Riders and competitors come from all over the States and, though, I am not a "horse-person", it's just beautiful to watch.

This is Tobey. He's an 8 1/2 week old bichon that joined our family last Friday. He is so much fun!!! Needless to say, it's been a little hard to keep my mind on painting the past few days!
