I'm not sure I've ever done such a little oil painting! It was fun--in big part because of the subject. Also, I decided to try working on a black ground. I had to think about the painting of it a little differently as far as putting values down. I was surprised that the color wasn't modified much by the ground. In a way, it reminds me of doing block prints as you start with the dark background and bring out the lights. Once your brain starts thinking that way, it feels really natural. I look forward to trying this again!

"Denise" #15 of 50 faces

Meet my friend, Denise. She is amazing--teaches Spanish, Russian and German, travels extensively and writes articles and books about it, is a poet, writes essays on spirituality, a mom and a grandma, goes on pilgrimages where she walks miles and miles to Santiago de Compostela. There's more but besides all that, she is a humble and loving person with whom I am grateful to share friendship. Happy New Year, Denise, and all of you who read this!
