Working at the gallery and needing to paint, so here's the result. It is so good to work from life! I love taking advantage of all that using photographs allows in painting, but the challenge of seeing a three dimensional scene and translating it to two, and finding the color (!) is so invigorating. It sharpens my senses in a different way.

This is another painting of a different area of the Painted Hills in eastern Oregon (the other painting was posted on Feb. 6). It was particulary stunning how the gray skies set off the color in the landforms.

Trying to keep it loose today, to see how far suggestion goes--as someone in my critique group said, "Not having to prove to the world that I can draw" (or something like that!). I don't mean that I don't value drawing skills, the ability to make a faithful representation--I teach how to do that and believe that it's not only a necessary building block, but an art in itself. What I am referring to is the tendency to have to put all the information in, to be a slave to unnecessary detail. I am trying to learn that!

Another grain elevator outside of my old hometown. I have always liked the simplicity of this particular one.

This painting is of some performers at the Bend Summer Festival. I loved the color, the movement and the music! This is the second time I've painted this subject. The first was last summer and was 12x12 inches. I like this one much better! I am pleased with how I managed not to put in unnecessary information and the focus is on the little girl. In the earlier painting, I had alot more background information (people and trees) and it was more of a distraction than anything!

This painting is done from memory of a woman in front of me at the bank yesterday. It was a kick to paint from memory--I really enjoyed the freedom of it! I found I was able to change colors, shapes and to improvise more than I do when painting from life or using photos as references. As far as the subject goes. . .me being a short person, I am always kind of in awe when I see someone who looks like her!

Another painting from a recent trip to Santa Fe. . .this one shows one of the native artists displaying her work across from the plaza. I like the contrast of the woman in the bright sun to the artist in the shade.

Dinner guests brought over a bunch of lovely fall flowers and I challenged myself to paint this chrysanthemum. I love how those flowers are like little fireworks!
