Another scene from the Painted Hills area of Oregon--this was painted in February when the colors were rich against the grey sky. A place like this that feels so like it has nothing to do with technology--or human beings for that matter--really puts things in perspective for me. It makes me remember that this existence--that of the earth and all that lives in and on it--is no less precious, vital and important than we are.

This little painting is from a visit earlier this week to the farm I grew up on. The sun was about down and it was so quiet. Some of the sounds you hear are the horses snorting or their tails swishing, a hawk calling and the sprinklers watering the fields. The light is beautiful as it stretches over the fields. I'd like to spend more time learning to capture that!

"On the Shady Side" (sold)

6"x6"
Oil on Board

I don't know if I have ever painted the same subject 5 times in a row! (I did the past three posts and also a watercolor besides this one). I'm not sure that this is "the painting I wanted to paint" yet, but I do feel like some things came together in this attempt. There is a pleasant balance of values and of the colors for me--at least in the original--the blues in this photo are a little too blue. Also, the composition isn't overwhelmed by the dark shape on the far right as it is in yesterday's post. I often paint fairly thinly and really enjoyed putting on some "juicy" paint!

"Sun in the Distance"

First of all, this is a day of celebration for me! I was notified that my blog will be included in the Daily Painters Gallery, www.dailypainters.com! I am looking forward to being a part of this group. Also, I missed noting my 100th post and see that today is my 105th--it's hard to believe! Just this time last year I was visiting the Daily Painters Gallery and the Daily Painters Guild wishing I was doing that, too--wishes come true. . .(well, there's more than a little elbow-grease involved!)

Rainy springs bring eastern Oregon to life. This painting is between Malheur Wildlife Refuge and French Glen. It was a day of constantly shifting clouds and light.

This is another painting of a different area of the Painted Hills in eastern Oregon (the other painting was posted on Feb. 6). It was particulary stunning how the gray skies set off the color in the landforms.

I think that painting this place gives me even more appreciation of the amazing harmony of color combinations in nature than I notice when I am actually there!
